Growing up, I don't remember sun protection being a big deal. We would play outside in the summer for hours on end. Not once did our moms call us back inside to say we needed to reapply our sunscreen or insist on us wearing sunglasses, or hats. As a matter of fact, I remember my mom telling me a story of how she once used baby oil so she "could get a better tan" when she was a teenager. Skin cancer just wasn't on our radar of things to worry about.
Now that I am grown and have children of my own, these are the things that I need to worry about for my children. I am fortunate enough to be armed with knowledge that my mom didn't have.
Here are a few facts I found on the Baby Banz website:
- 80% of a lifetime sun exposure is obtained before age 18.
- Children from the ages of birth to adolescence are at greatest risk to accrue eye damage from ultraviolet light.
- Immediately after birth, nearly all UV Light is transmitted through the lens to the retina of the infant’s eye because an infant’s lenses have not begun the critical development necessary to block UV Light.
- During childhood, the lens transmittance decreases as the child’s eyes further develop and by the age of 25, the lens absorbs almost all UV Light.
- UV exposure contributes to the development of many eye disorders such as Photokeratitis, a reversible sunburning of the cornea; Cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s natural lens which reduces vision; and Skin Cancer can develop on the eyelids and surrounding skin.
I am so glad that there are companies out there that help us moms make good shopping choices when it comes to skin protection. Baby Banz is one of those stores.

I love the baby banz!! I am a grandma of 7, have skin cancer and an eye growth due to the sun. Needless to say, I KNOW we need to protect our children!!! Give them protection so that they can still be outside for that good old natural vitamin D and fresh air!

My sister died from choroidal melanoma, melanoma of the eye...it is a rare cancer but does occur.
Protection against the sun is so necessary!
