Children's Books by David Michael Slater

>> January 28, 2009

David Michael Slater was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 8th, 1970. He teaches middle school in Portland, Oregon, where he lives with his wife and son. David writes for children, teens and adults.

Both of my children love to be read to. I love finding new and fun stories for them. I was excited when I was approached by author David Michael Slater to review some of his wonderful books.

This particular book has a funny little thing in common with me. When I was in Elementary School we were all required to write a book, and illustrate it. I don't remember the title now, but my book was about the cafeteria food coming alive when no one was around. So needless to say, I love the story of Missy Swiss!

"Missy Swiss wants to be the Big Cheese in the fridge, just like her hero, Cheese Louise. So when the family goes on vacation, she jumps at the chance to strut her stuff. But the plug gets pulled on her plan in a hurry, and everyone is going to spoil! Will Missy learn the true meaning of hero before it's too late?"
Sometimes life events can be very difficult for children to understand. The awesome thing about books is that they can put things in the language of a child and help them through things in a whole new way.

"Sophie and Dad were cooking along nicely until Dad announced he was going to add a new ingredient to the family recipe. He was going to marry Maggie! When asked to be the flower girl, Sophie heard, "Flour Girl!" Now Flour Girl is determined to spoil everything."

FLOUR GIRL has been awarded a Silver Medal in the 2008 Mom's Choice Awards!

In addition to these wonderful Children's books, David also write Teen Novels and Adult Fiction.

The book Seven ate Nine looks hilarious! I'd love that for my son.

Kristye January 28, 2009 1:49 PM

I think Ned Loses His Head was my favorite! My son seems to be losing everything these days and it seems a fun and timely message to share with him.

Kristye January 28, 2009 1:52 PM

I just twittered telling people about these books. I think they are adorable!

I like Missy Swiss, that looks like a nice book for kids. Thanks for the giveaway

Jim,  January 28, 2009 2:09 PM

I'm glad to see you've found this author. Inexplicably, he's been operating under the radar out here in Oregon, where he has built quite a devoted following. If you check the reviews for his just released teen series debut on Amazon (THE BOOK OF NONSENSE) and given the pending release of SELFLESS for adults, you might assume, as I do, that under the radar is soon to be a thing of the past. I attended the launch reading of SELFLESS the other day. I do not exaggerate when I say there was hysterical laughing from start to finish. Not for kids, though.

Dina January 28, 2009 2:19 PM

I like Seven Ate Nine - sounds like a great book to teach young kids about numbers. And I would like to read Selfless because I think I'd like it.

Beth January 28, 2009 2:27 PM

Ilike the Bored Book because it shows you can always find something to do if you look

Ervie Family January 28, 2009 2:30 PM

I like the children's book - Comin' Through. We're a new to the military family, and I know my kids are going to have lots of experiences being "the new kid", so I think it would be an awesome one for them.

Great gift, I'd love to win for my grand-daughter. Seven ate Nine looks great. Can't wait!

Jessica,  January 28, 2009 3:37 PM

Hey! Awesome to find this. You've done a good deed to help a writer who publishes with small presses. Case in point: I've read THE BOOK OF NONSENSE, and it is far superior to THE GRAVEYARD book, which just won the Newbery. But few know about NONSENSE since it comes from a tiny press. Still, quality wins in the end, and I'm sure this series will get huge once word-of-mouth does its thing.
