Human Body Detectives audio adventure {GIVEAWAY}

Tuesday, February 02, 2010

I was raised "au natural", rarely going to see a pediatrician, but instead seeing a chiropractor and my uncle, who is an N.D. (doctor of naturopathy).  Having that background, and seeing first hand what a healthy, whole-foods, natural lifestyle and diet can do for adults and children, I can really appreciate where Dr. Heather Manley, creator of Human Body Detectives, is coming from.

Her goal to continually search for books and resources that provide healthy eating tips and encourage parents to make healthy food choices for kids, and more importantly, encourage kids to make healthy food and lifestyle choices for themselves
is an admirable one.

She created the Human Body Detectives series of audio adventures to allow kids to learn about specific ways that their bodies work, and how to make them work better, in a way that is fun and engaging.

My boys already have a good knowledge base about such issues as immune systems and healthy foods, so the information in the Battle of the Bugs CD that we were given was not new to them.  We listened to it all together, and I appreciated the use of authentic sounding children's voices (maybe they really were Merrin and Pearl, Dr. Heather's kids who the adventures are based around) and the creative way that Dr. Heather told the story of how the immune system works.

The audio adventure comes with a fantastic workbook, chock-full of activities such as The HBD Code, word scrambles, and funny immune system jokes.  It also has two pages of AWESOME stickers, featuring some really gross immune system monsters that my boys thought were cool.  I'm going to save the workbook for when we do our human health unit in school, and I know they will appreciate a break to listen to the CD adventure again.

Personally, I'd like to see these available in pediatrician's offices, or handed out in hospitals to patients on their way home.  The more our kids know about how our bodies really work, the healthier the next generation will be.

There are two adventures in the Human Body Detectives series (digestive system and immune system) and another one about the circulatory system is on its way.  The new HBD website also features a section called Healthy Kids that offers fun recipes and practical advice to parents and kids about healthier eating.
